Wireless Android Auto is coming to Porsche, Ford, GM, and BMW vehicles, and it’s already available in over 100 million vehicles

Google made some significant announcements about the future of Android Auto and Automotive on cars at the I/O 2021 developer conference. The software behemoth has teamed up with a number of automakers to make Android Auto more accessible in a variety of new vehicles, as well as provide new features like instrument cluster integration. Google also stated that about 100 million automobiles are now compatible with Android Auto and that the company now has over three billion Android devices in use worldwide.

  • The big news is that Porsche AG, a German sports car manufacturer, will begin offering Android Auto on its vehicles in 2022. The carmaker had previously only offered Apple CarPlay to its customers, but with the latest update, Porsche’s new cars will also be compatible with Android devices.

Furthermore, Google stated in its speech that future Ford, GM, and Honda vehicles will enable wireless Android Auto. Under the GM banner, the tech behemoth has cooperated with around 15 brands, including Dodge, Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac. Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Skoda, as well as Stellantis brands Jeep, Chrysler, and Renault, are all part of the Volkswagen Group. BMW is also on the list. The 11th generation Honda Civic, which just made its world premiere, will also get wireless Android Auto, according to Google.

  • The BMW iX was used to demonstrate Google’s new instrument cluster integration, which will bring Google Maps to the screen in front of the driver, reducing distractions. The map will adapt to various BMW layouts, which will be user-selectable, and will eventually include other features such as EV charging and a parking app. BMW will also offer Fast Pair, which allows a smartphone to be instantly connected to the vehicle for wireless Android Auto and Bluetooth streaming.
