World Press Freedom Day 2021: History, Significance, Theme

  • World Press Freedom Day: 3rd may 2021 is celebrated as the world press freedom day across the globe.  
  • Although the theme of world press freedom day 2021 is “ Information as a public Good’.
  • Press is Concerned as the fourth pillar of the democracy – press, its reporters and, its photographers, etc. they always take the truth behind events with integrity and full of a reputation as well. 
  • It is being observed globally every year on 3rd May 2021. Being a part of the press requires a degree of freedom that is guaranteed by a democratic nation with the universal declaration of human rights. 
  • According to Reporters Without Borders, India ranks 142 in World Press Freedom in 2021 out of 180 countries.

History 

In the year if 1993, United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd as the World Press Freedom Day. This Declaration has come after a Recommendation made in 1991 at the 26th general conference session of UNESCO. This declaration has also come as the result of the 1991 Windhoek Declaration statement which was produced by African journalists about press freedom, presented at a seminar held by UNESCO, which concluded on May 3.

Significance & Theme 

This day is celebrated to ensure the safety and protection of the press. Even though there are ten nations – china, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Iran, and Cuba, etc. 

“Information as a public good” is the theme for the occasion this year. UNESCO states that the theme calls to cherish information as a public good along with exploring ways to distribute it and strengthen journalism.
