On May 1 this year, the holy occasion of Guru Tegh Bahadur 400th Prakash Parv is being marked. The day is celebrated prominently by the people of the Sikh community as it is the birth anniversary of the 9th Sikh Guru. He is also considered highly learned and has also made a great contribution to the Sikh holy book Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
His other works include15 ragas, 782 compositions, and 116 shabads. Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi. His death anniversary is observed on November 24 as Shaheedi Divas.

Who was Guru Tegh Bahadur?
- Guru Tegh Bahadur was the youngest son of the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind: Guru Hargobind had one daughter, Bibi Viro, and five sons: Baba Gurditta, Suraj Mal, Ani Rai, Atal Rai, and Tyag Mal.
- Tyga Mal was born in the early hours of 1 April 1621 in Amritsar. He was known as Tegh Bahadur (sword strength), given to him by Guru Hargobind, when he showed his valor in the fight against the Mughals.
- Amritsar was the center of the Sikh faith at that time. As a seat of Sikh Gurus, and through the chains of Masoods or missionaries in its connection with Sikhs in far-flung areas of the country, it had developed the characteristics of the state capital.
- Guru Tegh Bahadur was brought up in Sikh culture and trained in archery and horsemanship. He was also taught the old classics such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Puranas. He preferred prolonged spells of seclusion and contemplation. Tegh Bahadur was married on 3 February 1633 to Mata Gujri.

- PM Modi organized a high-level meeting to discuss the events/activities which will be organized to mark the 400th Birth Anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur the 9th Sikh Guru.
- There will be events throughout the year to mark the event. PM Modi said that these activities should be such that spread not only the life and teachings of Guru Tegh Bahadur but also the traditions of all Sikh Gurus all over the world.
- Praising the social service done by the Sikh community and gurdwaras all over the world, PM Modi said that research and documentation of Sikh traditions should be done.
- This tradition is a complete life darshan (philosophy) in itself, the Prime Minister said, it is a privilege of his government to be able to celebrate the 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev, the 400th Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur, and the 350th Prakash Purab Guru Govind Singh.
- PM Modi underscored the importance of taking the teachings of the Sikh Gurus to the younger generation and also said that the digital means make it is easier to reach out to them.
Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Supreme Sacrifice
- The youngest son of Guru Hargobind was publically killed in 1675 at Delhi on the orders of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb for refusing to convert to Islam. In Sikhism, his sacrifice is remembered with great reverence.
- In the words of Noel King of the University of California, “Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom was the first martyrdom for human rights in the world.
- Aurangzeb wanted to convert India into an Islamic nation, so was prepared to force Hindus to convert to Islam else be ready to be executed.
- A delegation of 500 Kashmiri Pandits led by Pandit Kripa Ram went to seek help from Guru Tegh Bahadur at Anandpur Sahib.
- On the insistence of his son who would eventually be known as Guru Gobind Singh, the ninth Guru traveled to Delhi to remove Aurangzeb from this religious iniquity.
- Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life to protect religion, human values, ideals, and principles.

Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Demise
- The religious leader was beheaded by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Delhi. Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in the national capital are considered to be where he was executed and cremated.
- His sacrifice and death anniversary is paid tribute with the Shaheedi Divas of Guru Tegh Bahadur every year on November 24.
