  • Kurma carried the weight of Mandara Mountain, which was utilized as a churning rod.
  • After churning the Kshira Sagar, poison (Halahala) emerged, due to which both Devas and Asuras collapse.
  • Devas and Asuras went to Lord Brahma, he refused to help them and advised only Lord Shiva can help.
  • They both went to Kailash Parvat and pray Lord Shiva, to help them.
  • Lord Shiva, come and consume the poison. Lord Shiva only can save the world from destruction, by consuming poison.

2- Dhanvantri Avatar of Lord Vishnu

  • After Lord Shiva consumed poison, the Dhanvantri avatar “Roopa” of Lord Vishnu appears.
  • He comes out from the ocean while holding the “Amrit” filled Kalash.

  • The original book of Ayurveda, Dhanvantari Samhita, was composed by Dhnvantri Dev himself.
  • That’s why on Dhyantraydashi i.e. on Dhanteras, people take the blessing from Dhanvantri Dev.

3- Dhanteras (Yamadeepdaan)

  • Dhanteras is also linked to the story of King Hima’s son. Whose astrologer “predicted” his death after marriage.
  • Dhanteras, remind us of the story, about what happened to Hima’s son after marriage?
  • Hima’s son get married and was so scared by that prediction.
  • The astrologer predicted that after marriage snake will bite him which would take his life.
  • The story tells what happened after the fourth day of marriage.
  • On the fourth day, his wife put her jewelry one over the other and lamps everywhere at the entrance.
  • She kept her husband awake by telling him stories and singing songs.
  • She thought, when Lord Yama, the god of death, disguised as a snake, he was dazzled by the light of the jewels and sat on a pile of riches in wait. For the opportunity to bite his husband.
  • Her wife keeps him distracted the whole night by telling him stories. That’s why Lord Yama leaves the place and spares the life of her husband.
  • Hence, to honor Lord Yamraj, Dhanteras is also called “Yamdeepdaan”.
  • However, the tradition of lighting a ‘Yama-Diya’ throughout the night dates back to this story.
