On February 23, Mercedes-Benz is gearing up for the world debut of the new C-class generation. The new model takes an outward evolutionary approach, as is common for the more conventional, long-standing models of Mercedes. The interior, however, with the new MBUX infotainment system and a comprehensive redesign, will be substantially overhauled over the old vehicle.

The architecture of the new C-class is, as shown by the latest prototypes, a direct evolution of the styling seen on the model today. Although its exterior features a modern-look front end with more angular headlights, the proportions, dimensions, and overall silhouette of the new car remain very similar to those of the model it replaces.

The starting point of the new C-class is the MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform from Mercedes. It provides a range of improvements over the steel and aluminum structure’s earlier version. These include, according to insiders, a more sophisticated electrical architecture that supports a 48V configuration, which is essential to a new range of plug-in hybrid drivetrains for the 2021 model.

The new MRA platform will also endorse successor models to the GLC and GLC Coupé, with a choice of both rear-wheel drive and optional four-wheel drive, in addition to the C-class sedan, estate, coupé, and cabriolet. Mercedes has provided the green light to a new C-class All-Terrain model as an upgrade to the current C-class line-up.

In international markets, the fifth-generation C-class engine line-up will mainly consist of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, which will feature a choice of EQ Boost mild-hybrid and EQ Power plug-in hybrid functions, in combination with either a starter/generator or electric motor mounted on the gearbox.

The new C-class, codenamed W206, will challenge the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and Jaguar XE when it arrives in European markets in the middle of 2021. While there is no news yet of the new C-class launching in India this year, Mercedes-Benz India will introduce it in the future.
