An earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck Assam and adjoining areas, including Bhutan, on Wednesday morning, the National Centre for Seismology said.

The earthquake hit Sonitpur, Assam, but tremors were also felt in Assam’s capital city, Guwahati, in the morning hours on Wednesday.
Vigorous tremors were felt in the North-East as well as parts of North Bengal. While there is no news of anyone being injured, the photos come from broken walls and windows, walls developing cracks.
The epicenter of the earthquake was near Dhekiajuli town, 140 km (86 miles) north of Guwahati. The earthquake struck at 7:51 am at a depth of 17 km from the surface.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he spoke with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and promised help from the center.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who tweeted minutes after the disaster, also shared photos of broken walls inside a building and of a broken boundary wall, showing the impact of the quake.

No injuries or casualties have been reported so far. But the quake damaged the wall and false ceiling areas in the grand Taj Vivanta of Guwahati.
The National Disaster Management Agency was assessing reports of destruction and casualties if any occur after the earthquake.
