The Shigmo Festival change in Goa due to Covid. As with the rise of Covid – 19 Cases across the country. for example – the Holi is being restricted in many places or states across the country. 

What is the Shigmo Festival?

• Shigmo is the celebration of a ‘rich, golden harvest of paddy’ by the tribal communities of Goa. It is a vibrant celebration full of color, song, and dance rooted in Goan culture and traditions.
• As there is the peek in Covid Cases, Goa recorded 1089 active cases of Covid-19, a steady increase from over 700 in March only.
• The Goa Carnival was held with all the pomp in February, ‘Shigmo’ as it is called in Konkani, is another vibrant celebration full of color, song, and dance rooted in Goan culture and traditions.

As the rising cases of coronavirus, the Goa government has decided to allow Shigmo festivities this year, the celebrations will be limited to three locations – Panaji, Ponda, and Mapusa.

Hence, there is the rising number of active cases in the state, like in many parts of the country, has made the government rethink public gatherings.
