Mahashivratri 2021: The Day of Lord Shiva

Maha Shivratri 2021 in India: this year Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on March 11. Every year this festival is celebrated as the convergence of forces of Shiva and Shakti. This auspicious day of Mahashivratri is the day of the grand marriage of lord shiva, who is believed as a god of destruction. 

While there is Shivratri every lunisolar month of the Hindu calendar, the maha Shivratri, or the great night of lord shiva’ happens once every year, when the winter recedes in February or March and covers the way for spring and summer.  

Mahashivratri is also celebrated in Nepal, with full enthusiasm and devotion. The devotees on the day of wake up early and follow strict fasting to seek blessings of God. They visit temples or pray at home. Devotees offer fruits, milk, and many other things to the Shivling. 

In India, all unmarried females stay devoted to this special eve of Mahashivratri. They all wish for a good husband and worship the god. 

 

In several temples across India, devotees chant “om Namah Shivaya all through the day. 

Women stay strictly fast (Vrata) on Mahashivratri. And at night, they break the fast, after worship. 

The day of Mahashivratri is particularly important to the Shaivism tradition of Hinduism. It is way different from other festivals. While other festivals are usually observed with lots of color and lights. The Mahashivratri is the day of introspection and self-reflection. 

 

What is the story of Shivratri?

In Shaivism, it is said that on this night, shiva had drunk the poison and performed a heavenly dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. While some other legends said, this is the night of their grand marriage with goddess Parvati. 

The most popular form of Mahashivratri will be found in Ujjain, which is believed to be one of the sacred abodes of lord shiva. 

Hence, with full devotion along with chants of shiva, celebrate Mahashivratri 2021, after the pandemic of covid-19. Seek blessings and prosperity from lord shiva, and let him do the wonders.
