HELLA‌ ‌launches‌ ‌series‌ ‌development‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌ new‌ ‌77GHz‌ ‌radar‌ ‌technology‌ ‌for‌ ‌passenger‌ cars‌

HELLA, a globally positioned automotive supplier, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of radar sensors, with over 90 million 24GHz sensors. The company is now further widening its leading role in the field of radar technology with the launch of the 77GHz radar sensors.

For example, at the HELLA electronics plant in Hamm, series development of the new 77GHz radar technology for an international automotive manufacturer has begun. Last spring, the technology was first put into series production in the trucking industry.

  • Further production starts will be made in the near future, based on several successfully obtained big orders for both passenger cars and trucks, including one from a German premium customer. HELLA is also working on the second generation of 77GHz radars, which will enter series production in 2024 for another German premium manufacturer.

“With our groundbreaking 77GHz radar sensors, we are continuing to push the trend toward autonomous driving,” says Björn Twiehaus, who is jointly responsible for the Electronics division as a member of the HELLA Management Board. “We are bringing radar-based 360-degree environment perception to the next level by using highly efficient hardware and smart apps, and thereby driving healthy mobility.”

  • Radar sensors have developed themselves as one of the key technologies for smooth environment perception on the road from assisted to autonomous driving. They constantly record the environment, identify pedestrians and other traffic participants as well as objects in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle, and provide consistent results regardless of weather or lighting conditions.HEH

  • 77GHz technology is becoming increasingly important, particularly for functions such as autonomous parking and automatic lane changes, because it provides a significantly larger signal bandwidth and thus improved environmental resolution compared to 24GHz. This makes detecting and classifying objects on the road much easier.

The radar system chip, which is built on RF-CMOS technology, is the heart of HELLA’s 77GHz radar sensors. Digital components and self-diagnosis devices, as well as transmitting and receiving components, can be implemented on the chip thanks to the unique architecture.

  • HELLA radar sensors use a modular, scalable platform concept as well. As a result, they accept a variety of vehicle architectures and interfaces, including Ethernet. As a result, customer-specific specifications, as well as existing and future NCAP requirements, can be implemented quickly and efficiently.

HELLA is constantly working to improve the efficiency of its 77GHz radar sensors. The second-generation 77GHz is distinguished by the use of cutting-edge antenna and chip technologies. This enhances the measuring capacity at close range by increasing the range, expanding the field of view, and increasing the range.

  • Trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians, for example, can be identified and monitored much more accurately in this way, leading to more informed decision-making rules, such as when implementing a lane change or parking. Also, small objects like kerbs and roadside posts can be more precisely located and measured using this method.
