People across the world are gearing up to celebrate Happy New Year 2022. Various events and programs are being planned all over the world to celebrate the coming year with joy and zeal. The most widely used calendar, “The Gregorian Calendar,” has a new year beginning on January 1.
Did you know that in the past, New Year’s Day was not observed on January 1? Instead, different cultures celebrated the new year on different days like in March, September, and December.
Let us know the history and significance of why the world celebrates New Year’s Day on January 1st? Also, here are some of the best happy new year 2022 quotes, messages, and wishes to share with your loved ones, friends, or family.
March was once considered the first month of the new year according to the Roman Calendar. Until 153 BCE, March was considered the first month of the year.
During the year 153 BCE, there were only 10 months in a year. Second-century Roman King Numa Pompilius added two more months, making January the first month. The name of the month is derived from Janus, the Roman God of beginnings.
The first day of the new year, according to the Julian calendar, is January 1. Julius Caesar made numerous changes to the Roman calendar in 46 BCE. As a result, January 1 was still designated as the first day of the new year.
This system was used for many years, but Christian countries launched several counterattacks on the Julian Calendar. Most Christian countries abandoned the Julian calendar in favor of their own culturally specific calendar. They stated that the new year would be celebrated on December 25th to commemorate the Feast of the Annunciation, or the birth of Jesus, i.e., Christmas.
Later, there were more doubts about the Julian calendar’s accuracy in calculating leap years due to its assumption that the average solar year was 365.25 days long. In October 1582, Pope Gregory XIII corrected this.
Pope Gregory XIII reduced the average year from 365.25 days to 365.242 days to avoid a calendar pile-up or the prior appearance of a portion of the events in terms of the equinoxes. The jumps were also spaced out over a long period of time to correspond with the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
While some countries quickly accepted the Gregorian calendar, it took many years for the rest of the world to accept it before it became widely used around the world. In some countries, such as Ethiopia, January 1 is still not considered as the New Year, whereas the traditional New Year in Chinese and Korean societies occurs between January and February, but not on January 1.
Furthermore, countries such as India celebrate the new year on January 1 according to the Gregorian Calendar, but India has different new years based on different religions.
The new year is as important as it appears to be to celebrate and cheer on another day!
People enjoy celebrating New Year’s because it gives them a sense of energy and excitement about a slew of new beginnings, as well as an opportunity to thank God for another 365 days!
Sliding into another year with a bang makes us want to spend the rest of the year the same way we started it—with warmth, festivities, delight, and laughter.
Furthermore, it is an opportunity to authoritatively take pride in our accomplishments and make our non-victories a thing of the past, to celebrate time spent well and make plans to compensate for lost time, to value new connections made with people, and bid farewell to the ones broken, and, most importantly, to celebrate and accept the people we have been this previous year.
Anything you enjoy doing is a festival or celebration, whether it’s spending the day with friends, loved ones, and family, spending the day in bed with your favorite movie on or partying with your friends.
