Cyclone Tauktae Can Hit Gujarat in Less Than 6 Hours Followed By The Increased Intensity of Rainfall in Mumbai

On Monday morning cyclone tauktae further escalated as an extremely severe cyclone category with wind speed 180-190kms/hour and it currently rages past the Maharashtra coast and has come closer to Mumbai.

The cyclone is most likely to hit the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and mahuva in Bhavnagar district today on 17 May between 8 pm-11 pm as a severe cyclone with a speed of 150-160 km/hr.

Goa and Maharashtra along with other places reported heavy rainfall during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. Heavy rain hit Ratnagiri, which reported 363.7mm between Sunday 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Monday. Some other stations which reported rainfall include Kolhapur, Harnai, Satara, and alibag.

According to the latest storm position at 5:30 am of Monday, the experts at the Indian meteorological department said that the cyclone tauktae was located 160 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 290 km south-southeast of Veraval, 250 km south-southeast of Diu, and 840 km of south-southeast of Karachi, Pakistan.

The parts that remain on high alert include, the entire Konkan, parts of Madhya Pradesh, southern and coastal districts of Gujarat together with Porbandar, Junagarh, Valsad, Rajkot, and Amreli.

Some other parts including Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman, Surat, Navsari, Surendranagar may also come under the influence of the coming storm with a wind speed of 80-90 km/hr roaring to 100kms/hr likely to sway till Tuesday.

The extremely severe cyclone tauktae showed winds packing with the speed of 80-90 km/hr roaring to 100kms/hr along the north coast of Maharashtra since Monday morning.

And at 12:30 pm today on Monday, the cyclone tauktae was located 120 km/hr west of Mumbai.

As of Monday morning, Mumbai and various other districts in north Konkan, including Palghar, reported a heavy rainfall that continued till dawn. As the storm was approaching, Mumbai was expected to receive heavy rainfall after 3 pm. The latest reports Mumbai recorded winds raging with a speed of 102kms/hr.

This approaching cyclone will cause extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra, Diu, and adjacent areas in the coming hours on Monday.
