Day 3- Chhath

The third day of Chhath Puja is divided into 2 parts according to what time they are performed

Sanjhiya Arghya-

  • The puja performed in the evening is called Sanjhiya Arghya.
  • In the evening, the whole house goes to the pond or reservoir, where they make offerings to the setting sun.
  • A number of people are gathered there to take the blessing from Parvaitins (main worshippers). Folk songs are sung which refute the culture and history of Bihar.

Kosi-

  • After this, women break their fast by giving prasad to each other.
  • After this whole process, Chhath Puja comes to an end.

Chhath Puja: Story

Mahabharata

  • In Vedas, the features of Chhath Puja are mentioned.
  • A Sanskrit poem of Mahabharata highlights the scenario where Draupadi performs the same rituals.
  • According to the poem, Draupadi and Pandavas on the guidance of noble sage Dhaumya performed the rituals.
  • Through the worship of Lord Surya (Sun), Draupadi not only got out of all her troubles but also helped the Pandavas to get back their lost kingdom later.
  • The sages of ancient times used this method to survive without any external food and were able to get energy from sunlight. This was done through the rituals of Chhath Puja.

Ramayana
