Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account was temporarily suspended a few days back. Now the micro-blogging site has also blocked the official Twitter handle of the Congress party citing violation of rules.
Earlier, the Congress had claimed that the handles of half a dozen senior leaders, including the party’s media chief Randeep Surjewala, have also been closed. On behalf of the party, it was said that the Twitter accounts of party general secretary and former minister Ajay Maken, party’s whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore, Assam in-charge and former union minister Jitendra Singh and Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev have been locked.

On August 4, Rahul Gandhi had tweeted a photo of the Delhi Cantt rape victim’s family. On this, the microblogging site said that it is a violation of its rules. Twitter had removed that tweet of Rahul.
After this, his account was first temporarily blocked, and later it was locked. Congress leaders did not like this and tweeted the same objectionable photo supporting Rahul. No action has been taken against all such leaders. Congress alleges that Twitter is doing this under pressure from the government.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had complained to Delhi Police and Twitter regarding this tweet. The commission had sought action against Rahul for posting the picture of the victim’s family. The commission said that this is a violation of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
In the matter, Twitter told the High Court on August 11 that Rahul had violated the rules. Senior advocate Sajan Poovaiya, appearing for Twitter, told the court that we have removed that tweet, because, it is also against our policy.
This case is of the Old Nangal village of Delhi Cantt. Where a 9-year-old Dalit girl, who went to get water from the water cooler of the crematorium, was raped and murdered. In this case 4 people including the priest of the temple located in the crematorium, Radheshyam are accused. The girl’s mother says that the accused also performed the last rites of the girl without her consent.
In order to prevent heinous crimes like sexual abuse against boys or girls under the age of 18 years and to give harsh punishment to those who do so, the Central Government has strengthened the law related to child sexual abuse, Protection of Child Sexual Offenses Rules- POCSO ( Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Rules- POCSO), 2020. This law was made in the year 2012, but under the amendments, the provisions related to child abuse were made more stringent.
